Public Safety Rules for Sounding Train Horn

As long as there are either workers or equipment present, the crews are required to sound the whistle until the locomotive is past the location. General operating rules concerning the use of the train horn, rule number 5.8.2, requires UPRR to use the horn when work crews or other pedestrians are in the right of way. Part [8] of the rule applies when approaching workers OR equipment regardless of any whistle prohibitions. Additionally, Code of Federal Regulations CFR 49 222.23 c authorizes the use of the engine horn in accordance with CFR 49 214 which is railroad workplace safety.

Once the siding construction is complete, there will be a reduction in horn use.
